The Spanish-American War established Puerto Rico as a territory of the United States. Since then, Puerto Ricans have been migrating stateside with migrations increasing rapidly in the mid-20th century. One of the favorite destinations has been the east coast, specifically New York City.


This exhibition presents factors surrounding the migration and culture of Puerto Ricans in New York City. Like other minorities, Puerto Ricans have struggled to achieve economic success in the country and continue to thrive in large cities. This exhibition is an introduction to the experiences of Puerto Ricans in New York City from mid-century to the 1990s.
